Cowhorn Vineyard & Gardens

Cowhorn Vineyard and Gardens is conceived as a regenerative estate winery rooted in biodynamic principles and long-term environmental stewardship. Set within 120 acres of rangeland prairie, forested hillside, historic irrigation canal and creek frontage along the Applegate River, the master plan, developed by Associate Principal Buddy Williams, organizes a diverse agricultural landscape into a cohesive, productive whole.

The design establishes the overall flow of the site, integrating vineyards, market crops, and future building locations to support Cowhorn’s goal of producing exceptional biodynamic wines within a “state-of-the-shelf” environmentally responsible estate. In addition to master planning, the work includes schematic design studies for future winery and support structures positioned along the hillside overlooking the vineyards.

Uncommon for a winery of this scale, the plan dedicates fifteen acres to diversified row crops and trellised berries, alongside forty acres of vineyards planted with Rhône varietals—Grenache, Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Syrah—carefully selected for their compatibility with the site’s soils and microclimate. Together, the landscape, agricultural systems, and architecture are designed to function as an integrated farm ecosystem, reinforcing Cowhorn’s commitment to biodiversity, resilience, and place-specific winegrowing.
