Itani Ramen

1736 Telegraph Ave. Oakland, CA
“Ugly Chic”
A term coined by our general contractor, “Ugly Chic” perfectly captures the design philosophy behind this project. At our request, the peeling plaster and paint were left untouched, creating a raw, textural backdrop for sleek new interventions in wood and steel. The space blends the gritty charm of traditional Japanese ramen shops with the refined sensibilities of uptown Oakland—mirroring chef Kyle Itani’s eclectic culinary vision.

Original 1930s features from the building’s Woolworth’s era—such as plaster columns and terrazzo flooring—were preserved and celebrated, now paired with contemporary elements like birch plywood walls and evocative Tokyo photography by business partner Daniel Holzman. The result is a space that embraces contrast: heritage and modernity, polish and patina, tradition and reinvention.
